The league’s Done in a Dayers (“Dayers”) have been busy this summer making a difference in the community in only a day, assisting with projects such as Some Other Place Soup Kitchen, CASA’s Annual Kids Carnival Balloon Dart Booth, Art Museum of Southeast Texas Family Art Day, Beaumont Public Library Summer Reading Program Celebration, the Beaumont Children’s Museum Booth at the Valero’s Kids Fest, running errands for the MDA, and helping Beaumont Community Partners to inventory the Rainbow Room. Collectively for July and August, the committee has volunteered for 107.75 hours!

Some Other Place is an ecumenical mission in urban ministry, where people of all faiths come together to provide services of all types to people who find themselves in emergency situations. The Some Other Place Soup Kitchen provides meals for the homeless and Dayers assist with preparing sack lunches on Saturdays. Volunteer hours are usually on the 1st, 4th and 5th Saturdays of the month from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.

The Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southeast Texas, Inc. is a non-profit service organization that recruits, trains, and supervises a diverse group of community volunteers, appointed by the Courts, to advocate for abused and neglected children in the pursuit of safe, permanent homes. Dayers assisted CASA by volunteering at their annual Kids Carnival on July 11th, where children and their families served by CASA and volunteers come together to enjoy themselves in a day of Summer Fun. Dayers volunteered with the Balloon Dart game, handing out treats and prizes to children who burst balloons (Dayers blew up over 300 balloons!) with darts.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association invited Dayers to help run errands August 17th through 28th to assist them with preparing for the MDA Telethon Online Auction to be held on September 1st. Dayers picked up over 40 items to be used in the online auction.

The Rainbow Room is an emergency resource center available to CPS caseworkers to assist them in meeting the critical needs of abused and neglected children. Stocked with new items, Rainbow Rooms provide clothing, shoes, underwear, baby formula, school supplies, and hygiene items to children entering foster or relative care and children in their own homes who live below the poverty line. Dayers assisted the Beaumont Community Partners July 24th and 25th with inventorying the Rainbow Room to get an accurate count of supplies on hand and what items may be needed. The Rainbow Room must keep track of private donations, as they will be matched in state funding.

Dayers also assisted the Beaumont Children’s Museum with their booth at the Valero’s Kids Fest on August 15th. Dayers informed parents and children about the status of the museum and about opportunities on how they can become involved with the museum. Dayers also showed off Stuffee and explained to the children the importance of a healthy diet and exercise and how Stuffee teaches them about the parts of the body (heart, lungs and stomach).

Dayers volunteered at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (“AMSET”) Family Arts Day on July 25th. AMSET’s Family Art Days are free and open to the public. They combine exploration of the exhibits, hands-on activities and storytelling.

Finally, Dayers assisted the Beaumont Public Library System with their Summer Reading Program Celebration. Dayers served refreshments and monitored the bouncy house. The Library’s Summer Reading Program is designed to help primary grade students (grades 1-4), foster a love of reading and to help them maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer months. The young readers are involved in exciting literacy activities such as paired reading with an older buddy, phonics games, stories, and much more!

Please join us in making a difference in a day!
