FRC Summer Camp

Adding Joy to Children’s Lives

Summer (noun): time from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next; usually observed by sleeping in, lazy days, lemonade stands, family car trips, and camp.

Summer is one of those times that can totally slip through your fingers. One minute you’re dreaming of sleeping in and delightful family activities—you know, the perfect summer vacation, and then suddenly you’re buying school supplies wondering where the weeks went. It’s so easy to let the time slide by without feeling like you’ve really accomplished anything. Not this summer, though!

The FRC summer camp, run by Beulah Joubert, is actually more than just what we do at Junior League. There are 90 kids, ranging in age from 4 to 12, both boys and girls. It starts the day after school gets out, and goes until the day before school starts. The campers enjoy a full day of fun at the FRC, in addition to field trips and our Junior League Art Camp. Our goals for the project were to promote creativity, sharing and fun through arts and crafts. Lofty goals for a group of girls with a bin of tissue paper, glue and scissors!

The campers enjoyed making tissue paper flowers, stained glass hangings, bubble paintings, bookmarks, friendship bracelets, and paper plate fish. They decorated frames for the photos we took of them and painted beautiful t-shirts.

We topped off the celebration with a wonderful pizza party! We had an enormous inflatable maze and moonwalk, and made clay sculptures with Greg Busceme from the Art Studio. Our party also kicked off a summer reading program. We collected so many new and gently used books that we were able to give each child 2 books and add many more to the FRC library. A fireman came to read to the campers, and representatives from our sponsor, Texas State Bank, helped hand out the books.

This summer, we added joy to the lives of the FRC summer campers with fun and creative art projects. We furthered the cause of literacy with our book drive and reading program. We sowed seeds in the minds of the girls that they might one day want to join the junior league and enhance the lives of other women, children and families. Then we kicked back by the pool and planned a few lazy days with the family.
