FRC Summer Camp

Actions speak louder than words. That old cliché rang true as the Family Resource Center Summer Camp Committee raided the art room of the FRC from June 8 – June 18 for our pirate-themed summer camp, “Your Treasure Awaits!” Our actions through art gave the 90+ children enrolled in the summer program the opportunity to be creative, smile, laugh, tell stories, and grow closer to us and each other. We glued, glittered, strung, decorated, tied, colored, and cut our way to fun. During the summer camp, we made Pirate name tags, Tissue flowers, Pirate telescopes, Pirate treasure chests, Jolly Roger flags, Father’s Day poems and frames, Garden mobiles, and Pirate photos with frames. We also partnered with Sarah Kirksey and Kids in the Kitchen to promote healthy snacks.

Words were still powerful tools for our summer castaways. Stephanie Daleo stressed the written word by reading How I Became a Pirate and Beaumont Police Chief Frank Coffin read the book Pirate School. Librarian Gwendolyn Pierre, from the Johns Library, talked about the summer reading program. Thanks to your donations, each child took home two books and we donated approximately 100 books to the FRC library.

Our efforts did not go unappreciated and we quickly realized as the camp commenced that the craft we made was not as important as the fact that we showed up each morning. We were always greeted with lots of hellos and hugs when we arrived. As part of our treasure chest craft, coordinated by Dawn Isabell, we asked the kids to finish the sentence, “FRC summer camp is a treasure because…” Richard wrote, “FRC Summer Camp is a treasure because it is fun to be here because of the Junior League.” Several committee members even received hand written thank you notes from the children! Paula Hall, assistant director of the FRC wrote, “I have tears in my eyes because there are not too many people like you guys and I am so appreciative for everything you all do for this center and these kids.”

Our committee had such a wonderful time with the children during the eight days of the summer camp. Corina Flatten, committee member, said, “I was really inspired by working at the FRC with those kids.” We had so much fun, in fact, that we returned on July 1 for a Fourth of July craft and ice cream party.

Thank you to our committee for making the camp a success! Members of our committee included Paulette Austin, Rebecca Boone, Stephanie Daleo, Corina Flatten, Alea Greer, Dawn Isabell, Caralee Thompson, Gretchen Wood, Devyn Mitchell - Chair, and Shari Brewer – Sustaining Advisor. This summer, the Family Resource Center Summer Camp was definitely Time Well Spent!
